Architecture
Granta Architects has joined CAR and we are now able to offer full architectural services. We work with private individuals, corporate clients and public sector bodies to produce sustainable developments that are fully compliant with the requirements of conservation.
We have a commitment to design excellence, seek to develop a close working relationship with every client, and aim to achieve innovative responses to the brief and a high level of architectural detailing. We are always sensitive to the architectural and natural environment as well as to the needs of the client.
Construction has a major role to play in sustainable development. Buildings are responsible for nearly half of the energy used and carbon dioxide emissions produced in the UK. Huge quantities of materials are used every year for new buildings and refurbishing older buildings, and around a third of all waste material sent to landfill sites comes from construction and demolition.
Every new building increases the pressure on the natural environment because of land-take, new demand for energy and water in use, consumption of natural resources for materials, and the waste arising during construction.
There are major opportunities for improving the efficiency of new buildings. There are often alternatives to using hazardous materials, opportunities for improving energy and water efficiency, ways to reduce or avoid waste in construction, and options to bring back into useful service land and buildings that have been abandoned in the past.
There are also major opportunities for cutting the carbon dioxide produced by existing buildings, so helping to address climate change. When new building work is combined with refurbishment, potential energy savings from improving the existing building usually exceed the gains achievable in new buildings.
