Andy Brown

Andy Brown is an engineer and building physicist, with over thirty years of practice in the design, modelling and monitoring of low energy buildings.

He was instrumental in the development of the innovative building services practice Fulcrum Engineering Partnership, and has worked on all types of buildings, including residential, commercial and educational. He has acquired an in-depth understanding of low energy and sustainable design of environmental services including lighting, heating and ventilation. He is a certified Passivhaus Designer.

Research has involved the performance evaluation of existing buildings and the development of computer tools for architectural design. Computer analysis of daylight and wind around buildings has been used to inform design studies for buildings in Europe and the Middle East and to prepare chapters for Environmental Impact Statements for major developments in urban areas.

He is a founder of Cambridge Carbon Footprint, a voluntary organisation disseminating the climate change message and empowering local communities to take positive action on the issue. He is co-author with Rosemary Randall of In time for Tomorrow: the Carbon Conversations Handbook.

He developed the CAR Sustainable Business Tool to support small businesses. He has also worked with the CAR natural hazards team on the analysis of weather events and modelling of volcanic pyroclastic flows and the mitigation of associated building damage.

He has been a director of CAR since 1997 and acted as Financial Director for twelve years to 2015.

Andy Brown qualified in both engineering and social sciences at the University of Cambridge and has carried out research at the Energy and Environment Research Group at the Open University and The Martin Centre for Architectural and Urban Studies at the University of Cambridge.
