Jason Palmer has 13 years' experience as a researcher and consultant. His doctorate focused on environmental management for smaller organisations, and since then he has focused mainly on sustainable construction.

Dr. Palmer joined CAR in 2002 and became a director in 2003. There are three main strands to his work. First, he works for government departments and local authorities on a range of environmental issues.  As an example, he worked under contract to the Department for Children analysing how well the latest crop of UK ‘sustainable’ schools is performing. Second, he works directly with architects and clients to ensure that all aspects of sustainability are addressed in building design. Third, he does modelling work to see the CO2 and cost impacts of changes to existing and planned new buildings. For example, he modelled different policies aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from the housing stock on behalf of the Scottish Government.

Dr. Palmer has carried out post-occupancy evaluation of more than 20 buildings – examining how the buildings perform in terms of climate change emissions and water consumption, as well as how well occupants' needs are met.
