DECC and DEFRA commissioned Cambridge Architectural Research to scrutinise the Household Electricity Survey – the most detailed monitoring of electricity use in UK homes ever undertaken. The Departments drew up a list of 30 lines of enquiry: how much power is used by different appliances in peak periods, how much could be switched to periods of lower electrical demand, where does electricity go when householders are asleep, and how much power is used when appliances are left on but not doing anything? More important still, how much electricity can we save and how?
