Luca Leone is an architect-planner working in the field of sustainable development and management of the built environment.

He was educated at Dulwich College, London, and Magdalene College, Cambridge. At Cambridge he studied architecture, becoming an RIBA qualified architect in 1985, and went on to complete a postgraduate diploma in urban development planning at University College London. In the course of his postgraduate studies, he specialised in urban planning in developing countries and disaster-prone regions.

In the course of his career he has worked for private architectural practices in the UK and Italy, including the Richard Rogers Partnership in London and Studio Giovanni Michelucci in Florence. He has also worked in local government, as senior architect-planner in the urban design division of Westminster City Council. In 1990 he moved to the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (UNCHS-Habitat), Nairobi, Kenya, where he worked in the field of urban management and municipal development, with projects in sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and South America.

Upon his return to the UK, he joined CARtograph Ltd, a CAR spin-off company specialising in the development of catastrophe models for the insurance industry. As marketing manager and sales executive for the international reinsurance market, he contributed to the company’s growth within five years from a six-person start-up to the leading European company in its field, whereupon the company was merged with the global leader Risk Management Solutions Inc. (RMS) of San Francisco, USA.

Returning to the mother company CAR as a director in 1999, he has used his commercial experience to focus on business development for the company, in terms of both expanding the client base within traditional market sectors such as risk, and diversifying into new applications for the company’s broad range of expertise.

In the risk field, he has been responsible for product development and marketing of the Global Event Vulnerability Estimation System (GEVES), CAR’s flagship catastrophe modelling range for the reinsurance industry, and has overseen its transformation to a multi-peril system with new windstorm models, reflecting the growing importance of climate change-related events to the industry. He has also pursued his interest in urbanism and has developed a sustainable transport strategy for Greater Cambridge.
